WVU Black Faculty Association
Mission, Goals, and Objectives

The Mission of the WVU Black Faculty Association is to enhance the well-being and quality of work life of Black faculty, staff, and students by ensuring that West Virginia University is aware of and responsive to the needs of Black faculty, staff, and students.

The WVU Black Faculty Association will:

Goal
1. Promote the professional development of Black faculty and serve as an advocate for academic excellence and educational equity.

Objectives
a. Recommend professional development topics and programs to the Associate Provost for Academic Personnel.

b. Help Black faculty secure mini grants through the office of the Associate Provost for Academic Personnel and through other WVU offices.

Work with the Associate Provost for Academic Personnel in developing a Black faculty mentoring program that places a special focus on the promotion and tenure process and academic writing.

d. Help Black faculty develop proposals to present their work at professional conferences.

Goal
2. Advance the recruitment and retention of Black faculty and graduate students; be a liaison between Black faculty and the University administration (i.e., Academic Affairs and Research, Student Affairs, the Office of Graduate Education, etc.).

Objectives
a. Design and promote a welcome program for Black graduate students.

b. Host networking events for Black faculty.

Maintain a list of Black Faculty Association members who are available to meet individually with Black faculty visiting campus.

d. Advocate for teaching fellowships for Black doctoral students from throughout the United States.

Goal
3. Partner with campus and community organizations that share similar mission
statements and goals.

Objectives
a. Identify and communicate with leaders of organizations that have similar mission statements and goals.

Goal
4. Hold the University accountable to its own stated mission and strategic plans regarding the matters of diversity and keep the issues of diversity, inclusivity, and equity at the forefront of policy making at the University. Special concerns include (1) increasing the recruitment and retention of Black faculty and Black graduate and undergraduate students and (2) increasing the responsiveness of the institution to the academic and socio-economic challenges facing students

Objectives
a. Assist in the review of existing policies and procedures that impact the lives of Black faculty, administrators, staff, and students.

b. Assist in the development of new policies and procedures that impact the lives of Black faculty, administrators, staff, and students.

Review existing programs, policies, and procedures that are designed to promote recruitment and retention of Black faculty, administrators, staff, and students.
